The author had seen a lot in his life because there
had been white men around. He made
friends with some of the sailors and acted as their guide and
translator. One of his new friends, Captain John Smith, was a good, honest man. They
both thought it would be very important for the English to see what
Indians were like. After a short stay in England, the author decided to go back to his landand he
went to another English captain, who had promised to get him home safely. But instead he had sold him into slavery,
to the Spanish and he was bought by monks. They taught him to read
and write. Sometimes the monks told him stories about great people and
their great deeds.
Then he had remembered about the greatest
treasure of his tribe. It used to be hidden in a cave deep in
the forest, but this place was not a big secret. He went to the forest
and found the treasure in its usual place.
He couldn't leave the
treasure there and he didn't dare destroy it. After all, he had found out
about the white men, I understood that if they found the treasure it
would be a catastrophe. He
decided to stay near the graves of his tribe and guard the treasure himself. He knew that
the Pilgrims were not bad people, they were better than a lot of other
white men. He felt sorry for them and decided to help.
