Since 1991 Independence Day was celebrated on July 27th, on the day when the sovereignty of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Rebublic was declared. Then the name of the country was changed to the Rebublic of Belarus. In 1996 a decision to mark Independence Day on July 3rd was made because on that day in 1944 Minsk was liberated from the Nazis.
