Происходит от французского глагола pique-niquer, зародившегося во французском просторечии XVII века, хотя практика еды на траве существовала всегда. Говорилось «устроить обед типа поклевать-чего» (faire un repas à pique-nique), то есть совместную еду в складчину, когда каждый приносит что-либо поесть.
