Выбор was/were зависит от числа. Если единственное, то was. Если множественное, то were.
Например: They were writing.
He was writing.

First of all I can say that i have no ideas about dreams because it can be good or bad.If i will talk psychologically,It is bad because our brain do not realy have a rest but on the other hand it is great fun when we will see something nice.
