Dinosaurs ("terrible lizards") - animals belonging to the class of reptiles, subclass the archosaurs. There are four platoons of archosaurs: americasby dinosaurs, ornithischia dinosaurs, pterosaurs (flying reptiles) and crocodiles. The range of differences between dinosaurs was so great that the relation between them are established with great difficulty. They could be the size of a cat or a chicken, and could reach the size of a huge whale. Some of them moved on four legs, others ran on its hind legs. Among them were clever hunters and bloodthirsty predators, but they were harmless and herbivorous animals.
The most evident difference dinosaurs from other reptiles is the location of their limbs. They are located directly under the body of the dinosaur, about the same as in mammals. Dinosaurs are land animals.
The word "dinosaur" means "terrible lizard" was introduced by British zoologist Richard Owen in 1842.
Nearly 140 million years, these animals are dominated on the planet. They are spread across all continents and have adapted to life in different conditions. The Mesozoic or "the middle age of life" - the time when dinosaurs lived, usually divided into three periods: Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous. Dinosaurs appeared on Earth about 200 million years ago, in the Triassic. At the time of the modern continents were joined together and formed a single whole. The climate was hot and dry, and therefore, extensive areas of land resembled a desert. On wet lowlands in the river valleys and along the coasts of the oceans grew ferns and horsetails, and in forests - tree ferns, conifers and Ginkgo trees. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods dinosaurs were very numerous and varied. About 65 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period, dinosaurs became extinct.
