В 55 году до нашей эры римский легион во главе с Юлием Цезарем пересек Ла-Манш, который отделяет Британские острова от континентальной Европы. Высадившись в Англии, римляне основали военный городок на северном берегу реки Темзы. Будучи специалистами в области строительства, они начали укрепление своих поселений толстыми массивными стенами и начали строить дороги по всей стране, ведущие к берегу моря. После пребывания в Великобритании в течение двух столетий римляне вернулись на континент, оставив после себя прекрасные дороги и крепкие укрепления. Одно из римских поселений было названо Лондиниум Августа. Четыре столетия спустя, по мнению некоторых историков столица Великобритании была основана именно в этом месте, и часть римской стены всё еще лежит глубоко под землей под современным Лондоном.
