Впервые в Европе люди начали собирать монеты в период Возрождения (считается, что первое коллекционирование имело место в Италии), затем эта деятельность получила распространение и в иных странах. <span>В нашей стране было отмечено собирание </span><span>монет в эпоху Петра I, когда Россия встала на путь освоения европейских культурных форм. Так как именно он приобрел в 1721 г. в Гамбурге нумизматическую коллекцию Модерса, помещенную в кунсткамеру. В первый раз в нашей стране нумизматическое творение напечатал академик Байер (Санкт-Петербург, 1734 год). Появляется множество универсальных и специализированных собраний, как частных, так и государственных.</span>
