Неопределенный артикль - a или an ставим перед существительным в единственном числе, перед согласным звуком пишем артикль a (a dog, a cat), перед гласным звуком пишем артикль an (an eye, an egg).
Определенный артикль the ставим перед существительным и в единственном и во множественном числе, если речь идет об известном предмете (об определенном), например,
This is a cat. - Это кот. (какой-то, первый раз употребляем с артиклем a)
The cat is black. - Этот кот черный. (мы имеем ввиду определенного кота, о котором уже упоминали в первом предложении).
