First conditional

We use the first conditional when we talk about real and possible situations.

I’ll go shopping on the way home if I have time.
In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually if + present simple and will + infinitive. It’s not important which clause comes first.


Second conditional

The second conditional is used to talk about ‘unreal’ or impossible things.

If you didn’t smoke so much you’d feel a lot better.
The structure is usually if + past simple and would + infinitive. It’s not important which clause comes first.


Third conditional
The thirdconditional is used to talk about ‘unreal’ or impossible things in the past.

You would have passed your exam if you had worked harder.
The structure is usually if + past perfect and would + have + Past Participle. It’s not important which clause comes first.

Wishes

We use past tense forms to talk about wishes:

We use past tense modals would and could to talk about wishes for the future:
I don’t like my work. I wish I could get a better job.
We use past tense forms to talk about wishes for the present:
I don’t like this place. I wish I lived in somewhere more interesting.
We use the past perfect to talk about wishes for the past:
I wish I had worked harder when I was at school.
