The pyramids of Giza - this is the only surviving object that entered
the famous list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. They are
located on a limestone plateau, hundreds of meters from the
south-western outskirts of Cairo. In ancient times, the inhabitants
called this place imentet, which meant "West". Then it became known as
kher neter ("cemetery"). In the seventh century, the city of Giza was
founded nearby. This name is fixed and behind the place, which is
visited by millions of tourists annually.
Giza became famous during the Fourth Dynasty of the Pharaohs of Ancient
Egypt after the pyramids of Cheops (Khufu), Khafre (Khafre) and Mikerin
(Menkaure) were erected here. The sculpture of the Great Sphinx is also
widely known. The statue is 57 meters long and 20 meters high embodies
the power of a man, a god and a lion.
