Если речь идёт о количественных местоимениях,то это синонимы,обозначающие большое количество/число людей, предметов,вещей.Используются как с исчисляемыми именами существительными,так и с неисчисляемыми.
Если рассматривать наречие a lot ,то имеется ввиду очень часто или очень много. Как правило,оно ставится в конце предложения и никогда не употребляется перед именем существительным.
