Секвойя родился где-то между 1760 и 1776 годом,в Чероки-Виллидж,штат Тенесси. Его мать была индианкой,а отец -- белым человеком. В детстве он повредил ногу и не мог свободно ходить,потому получил своё имя Секвойя,что означает "нога свиньи" на языке чероки. Секвойя женился на девушке племени чероки и завёл семью,но часто работал на белых людей и провёл много времени в их семьях. Секвойя никогда не учился читать и писать на английском,но видя,как белые люди читают книги или пишут письма,он назвал книги и письма "говорящими листьями" и решил,что индейцы чероки тоже должны иметь свой собственный язык. Над письменностью чероки он начал работать в 1809 году. А для того,чтобы закончить эту работу,ему понадобилось 12 лет. Когда он показал свою систему своим людям,то стал очень популярным. Тысячи индейцев чероки быстро учились читать и писать. В 1824 от них же он получил медаль,которую носил до конца жизни. В 1825 году множество европейских книг было переведено на этот язык,в в 1827 в США вышла первая индейская газета. В 1843 году его именем были названы самые толстые в Калифорнии национальные деревья,а позднее и парк.
