The name "Africa" appeared in the II century BC. e. But then it was not even called a huge continent. In the year 146 BC. e. Romans conquered the land in present-day Tunisia. They founded a colony, calling it Africa, obviously, by name Berber plemёn- afarikov who lived in the vast area up to Gibraltar. Other areas of the continent for a long time called Libya and Ethiopia. In the XVI century scholar Muhammad al-waza wrote that the name "Africa" comes from the word "faraka", which means "to divide." Africa- splinter vast continent of Gondwana, which many thousands of years ago existed in the southern hemisphere of our planet. As with other fragments of this continent, Africa has massive shape.
