Niagara Falls [naɪˈægərə fɔːlz] is one of the most popular tourist destinations in both the United States and Canada.
It is actually three waterfalls that lie on the border between Canada and the USA, on the Niagara River. The three waterfalls are Horseshoe Falls (also known as Canadian Falls), American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Horseshoe Falls and American Falls are separated by Goat Island. Bridal Veil Falls are separated from American Falls by Luna Island. Horseshoe Falls are the widest (820 m) and highest (51 m) of the three. The water that runs over the falls comes from the Great Lakes.
Today more than 12 million people visit the Falls and the surrounding areas each summer. Favorite excursions include the Maid of the Mist boat tour, which takes visitors into the basin of Horseshoe Falls, and a trip 175 feet down to the very edge of Bridal Veil Falls.
