The Phoenix is a mythological bird-like creature that lived in Paradise.
In ancient Egypt and in ancient world, this fabulous bird was associated with the worship of the sun. The Egyptian phoenix was said to be as large as an eagle, it had brilliant scarlet and gold feathers and a melodious cry. Only one phoenix existed at any time, and it was very long-lived — about 500 years. As its end approached, the phoenix built a nest of aromatic herbs and spices. Then the nest was set on fire, and the Phoenix was consumed in the flames. All that was left was a tiny worm. After three days, a new Phoenix rose from the ashes and flew with the ashes to Heliopolis (“City of the Sun”) in Egypt, where it put the ashes on the altar in the temple of the Egyptian god of the sun, Ra.
People associated the phoenix with immortality. The phoenix was compared to undying Rome, and it appears on the coins of the late Roman Empire as a symbol of the Eternal City. It was also interpreted as an allegory of resurrection and life after death.
