I think adults often see the age between 13 and 19 as 'difficult' because their children stop being obedient and start to spend less time with their family choosing to hang out with friends. That is how teens try to become independent. This loss of control worries adults a lot. They are afraid that their teenage children can do something dangerous, silly or illegal. This period is difficult because some changes in teens are sudden and unexpected, and sometimes adults don't know how to react, what to say or do.
___________
