Britain, Great Britain, the United Kingdom (UK for short), England, the British Isles — these different names are sometimes used to mean the same thing, and they are frequently used wrongly. Strictly speaking, England, Great Britain and the British Isles ought to be used as geographical names, since England is only a part of Great Britain. Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland, but the British Isles include Great Britain and the whole of Ireland, that is both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Eire.
They sometimes say that it is as difficult to find a typical Englishman as it is to find a typical Briton. What is the mixture that we call British?
After my hard and busy school year my summer holidays began (Past
Simple Active). I felt (Past Simple Active) happy when hard and busy
school year finished (Past Simple Active) and summer holidays began
(Past Simple Active). I started (Past
Simple Active) to plan a lot of wonderful things to do during my summer
vocation.
I was dreaming (Past Continuous Active) about visiting far south
countries I always wanted (Past Simple Active) to visit. For example, I dreamed
(Past Simple Active) to visit, Greece islands or Spanish beaches. But I had
to go (Past Simple Active) to the Azov Sea seaside with my parents. The
water was very warm (Past Simple Active) there, because the Sea
of Azov isn't deep. (Present Simple Active) There were (Past Simple
Active) different kinds of entertainments there. Best of all I liked (Past
Simpe Active) water scooters and discos.
There was (Past Simple Active) nothing to do all day except taking
sunbathes and swimming. I was playing (Past Continuous Active) with my
little sister on the sand and taught (Past Simple Active) her to swim.
Later, I returned (Past Simple Active) home and spent (Past
Simple Active) some time there going out with my friends, reading, listening to
the music, watching TV and playing computer games. After that I went (Past
Simple Active) to the sport camp where I spent (Past Simple Active) twenty
days with my friends.
It was very useful experience (Past Simple Active) for us,
because we had to get up (Past Simple Active) very early, to train a
lot. But it made (Past Simple Active) us stronger and healthier.
I was very happy (Past Simple Active) to return home and to spend
several days in my summer cottage, where I had (Past Simple Active) a
rest helping my grandfather to dig the garden, to irrigate plants and to gather
fruit and vegetables. I was fishing (Past Continuous Active) with my
grandfather sometimes and we cooked (Past Simple Active) our fish
together.
Only insects were spoiling (Past Continuous Active) my good humour. I was
enjoying (Past Continuous Active) floating in the boat, swimming and
helping my grandparents.
During my summer holidays I made (Past Simple Active) new friends, read
(Past Simple Active) a lot of interesting books, knew (Past Simple
Active) many useful things. Now, I feel (Present Simple Active) ready to
get back to school.
I am happy (Present Simple Active) to meet my school friends and
teachers.
I don't
like to be engaged in house affairs, but it's necessary. Our apartment is
large, and our mother can't do everything alone. Of course, it is boring to do
household chores, but I do not like to quarrel and upset my parents. I hate
washing the dishes. I don't like water the flowers, but it must be done. We
distributed the responsibilities at home, and it certainly becomes easier. My
sister and I are responsible for cleaning of the rooms. Twice a week we sweep
the floor, water our mother's flowers in the pots. It seems they are
everywhere: in the kitchen, in the rooms, in the bedroom, in the boxes on the
floor. My brother takes out the rubbish and keeps order on the balcony. The
carpets are daddy's responsibility. But we enter the kitchen, only to have breakfast-lunch-dinner.
This is our mother's territory. We believe that by doing things together, we
are real power. A family.
