Ian didn't tell (or confirm) that she is/ever was his girlfriend despite all expectations of the fans and their strong confidence that it is so. On each fact hinting that there were something more that co workers in between then,there is always a solid disproving fact and conjectures of fans not always (actually, rarely at all) coinciding with reality. Building the fairy tale of "nian" fans for years preferred to ignore information which they considered negative and to trust only to what that to them it seemed true, often only to their own conclusions and wishes.
