Dear Meg,
Many thanks for your letter.
You are asking me about Russian holidays. I'll do my best to answer your questions.
The most important holidays in our country are New Year's Day, Women's Day, May Day, Victory Day, and Independence Day. We also have non-official "Men's Day. It is a public holiday called "The Homeland Defenders Day". And the 1st of September is the Day of Knowledge — it's the beginning of a school year.
My favorite holiday is new Year’ Day. We celebrate it at the 31st of December. There are lots of traditions to spend this holiday in Russia. For example, we decorate the New Year Tree and rooms in the house with colored lights and snowflakes. We build snow slides in yards, sculpt snowmen out of snow. Small children wait for the Father Frost. They sing songs, read poetry or dance to receive the presents.
We have a family tradition to celebrate the New Year together. We gather together at home, prepare the festive dinner. At 10 ten minutes to 12 o'clock we watch the congratulation’s speech of our president by TV. And then listen to the Kremlin chimes beating 12 o'clock. We congratulate each other, give presents. Then we go outside to light fireworks. We prefer to watch fun and holiday shows by TV all the night. And we go to bed in the morning of the next day.
I hope the information will be useful for you. Good luck with your project!
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
