The food is crushed by the teeth and moistened by the saliva. It is still further broken down by the muscular walls, while juices are secreted by the gastric lining to continue the process. Juices are secreted by the liver and pancreas into the upper section of the smaller intestine, and the food is converted so that the body can assimilate it. The walls are covered by tiny protections in the intestine and the nourishment is absorbed from the food. Most of the liquid is absorbed by the body here from the indigested food and the remainder is extreted as waste.
