To give someone a cold shoulder - to keep someone sweet
To roll in money - to live from hand to mouth
To give the green light - to throw obstacles in one's way
To be all at sea - to know which way the wind blows
To take the heat out of something - to add fuel to the fire
To get straight to the point - to beat about the bush
-This weather is very nice! Isnt it?
-Yes I agree with you. Today is very shiny.
-Hmmm. What is your name, sir?
-John. And yours?
-Mary.
-Would you have a cup of tea at the nearest cafe, Mary?
-Thats a good idea!
When we hear of examples of the great activists of the world, whether that’s Martin Luther King Jr. or Mother Teresa, they can sound otherworldly. Their contributions to society were great, but they are venerated in a way that strips them of their humanity and makes us feel like we’ll never be able to live up to them, no matter how much we want to. But that’s simply not true. All it takes is one idea and the right mix of determination and willpower to effect change at the local level. Start with one thing you’re passionate about, and find small, local ways to organize and find solutions to the problem.
Kyiv is the city with a history that spans more than a millennium. It is one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Green streets fully harmonize with impressive architecture.
During the reign of Prince Volodymyr the Great, the first stone church in Ukraine was built. The Golden Gate, built in the 11th century, was the primary entrance to the fortress. It was very famous in Eastern Europe. It was restored in 1989.
St Sophia’s Cathedral is located not far from the Golden Gate. It faces a square, in the centre of which there is a monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks.
St Sophia’s Cathedral was often used to receive foreign ambassadors and sign treaties in the past. The first school and library was situated in the church as well.
The church was built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise to commemorate the victory over the Pechenigs. At that time it was a major cultural and political centre of Kyivan Rus.
